If you’re building an E36 M3 track car or race car, you probably don’t need these. But if you’re doing an OEM + E36 M3 restoration, the BMW Motorsport door handles for the E36 M3 are a must have! With that being said, they’re kind of, expensive. Okay, they’re really expensive, and they’re a pain in the butt to install. But, they’re totally worth it!
If you’re not familiar with these little beauties, these are BMW Motorsport door handles that are only available from BMW. Sure, you might be able to find them second hand but since these are actually keyed to your car from the factory, you’ll have to figure out how to chisel out the door lock and replace it with your own. I didn’t want to go down that route, so I bought these new from BMW.
These are around $500 dollars. Not cheap. But, they’re really cool and add a great touch to any OEM + E36 M3 build you might be doing. In order to place an order for these you have to be able to provide the car’s VIN and proof that you own the car. Once you can do that, BMW will place the order for these Motorsport door handles and the wizards over in Germany will key the locks of the handles to your car. How cool is that!
I also opted to order the door handle trim pieces as well. I figured for an extra $50 or so, it was worth it.
Installing these door handles isn’t the easiest thing in the world, but it’s also not the worst thing. Put it this way, the driver side took me about 3-4 hours and the passenger side took me about one hour. The learning curve is steep, lol. Word of advice, bite the bullet and remove the window. It just makes things easier. Plus, while you’re in there you can lube up the window guides!
